Iceland : Puffins and More
Iceland : Puffins and More July 10-17, 2018 Limited to a maximum of 6 participants. (2 space now available)
Join Shoot The Light host Michael Milicia for a visit to the land of puffins and the midnight sun.
This field-intensive and bird-centric workshop will be based on Grímsey Island, a 2 square mile gem on the Arctic Circle which is home to about 90 people and 1 million seabirds including one of Iceland’s largest puffin colonies. This is a "one stop shopping" location for the serious bird photographer with large numbers of nesting Atlantic puffins, razorbills, common murres, Arctic terns, black-legged kittiwakes, northern fulmars, golden plovers, snow buntings, red-necked phalaropes, common snipe, ringed plovers, and more. There is also a picturesque lighthouse and church, distant snow-covered mountain backdrops, and a group of photogenic Icelandic horses.
This will be Mike’s seventh visit to this location and he continues to discov-er new photo hot spots in the nooks and crannies of the island’s coastline on every trip. Basing ourselves on the island will give participants the freedom and flexi-bility to photograph wherever, whenever, and whatever they choose during the 21 hours of daylight that will be available each day. Time that might otherwise be spent unpacking, repacking, and driving from place to place can instead be spent in the field and you will not be dependent on group transportation to get you to the optimum shooting locations at the time of your choosing. This extended field time will also allow for more instruction, including more opportunities for one-on-one sessions and individualized coaching as desired. Of all the species on the island, the puffins tend to steal the show. This is an especially good location for photographing puffins in small and large groups and for photographing puffins in flight with birds flying by at near eye level at a rate of dozens per minute at various times of day. You will be free to roam the entire island but some of the best photography will be found within a few hundred yards of our guest house. We have timed the workshop to take place after the puffin chicks have hatched so that we will also have the adults bringing mouthfuls of fish back to their burrows. In addition to the multitude of land-based avian opportunities, there will also be an excursion by boat (weather and sea conditions permitting) which will provide an entirely different perspective including great looks at the nesting cliffs.
Accommodations on the island will be at a simple but modern guest house with private rooms, shared baths, and wi-fi. Arrangements have been made to have all meals catered at the guest house which will allow us to have even a bit more time in the field each day.
